Autumn Crocus 'Major'

'Colchicum ‘Major’ will make you look good, why? Because it appears exotic and magical, yet they grow and flower with ease. So much ease in fact when they pop up from nowhere each year they will surprise even you.

The soft, lilac to pink flowers (10-15cm) open in the autumn with up to 20 blooms from an established corm. The goblet shaped blooms can stretch up to 15cm tall. The bees love them!

Autumn Crocus ‘Major’ holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know it is hardy and reliable. The blooms are followed by green strappy foliage late winter to spring, becoming dormant in summer. The leaves are broad with deep corrugation and grow to around 30cm long.

Plant Colchicum ‘Major’ in full sun in humus rich, well drained soil. They look good planted at the base of deciduous trees. You might also plant them along pathways, or in rockeries or pots, where the flowers can be easily admired. While rabbits will ignore them, slugs and snails will not, so it is a good idea to keep an eye out for those pests.

Crocus autumnal, Syn. C. byzantinum is also known as Byzantine Meadow Saffron, Autumn Crocus and Naked Ladies. It flowers a little later than C. agrippinum."
