Boston Ferns are one of those classic, good looking, forgiving and enduring house plants. In hanging baskets, pedestals or pots the arching fronds are always fabulous and they completely encircle the plant to perfectly fill the space.

I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room without turning on a light. They can grow in artificial light and will need 8-10 hours of this a day – good news for the office. The occasional rotation (remember to do this when you water) will result in fuller growth.

TIME FOR A DRINK: Water fairly freely spring/summer and less in winter when the plants don’t use as much moisture. Make sure you water well, so the water runs out of the drainage hole and the rootball is saturated. Then allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out before you water again. The tips of the fronds tend to brown if they are lacking water. Brown leaf tips could also be a sign they need some humidity, a quick water spritz every other week in warm weather will work wonders.

I WILL SURVIVE: In pots or hanging baskets choose a good quality potting mix so there is good drainage. Choose an option with drainage holes, or be promise to be careful with watering, they don’t like to sit in boggy soils. A diluted liquid fertiliser in spring and summer will keep them happy and healthy.

Repot in spring, only as they become overcrowd in their current home, or need a refresh, ensuring you keep the crown above the soil when you do. If you have an open fire place, they would be best in another room over the winter as they resent smoke in poorly ventilated areas. They also resent cold draughts or heating/air con vents.
