Carpet Primrose

Despite its rarity, this gorgeous Primula is not too hard to grow and can increase with good pace. It was described by a French botanist as “petite, vivacious and rustic with a rampant rhizome” – hard to get a better description than that – it also gives a hint as to why they are commonly known as Carpet Primroses. I have grown it in my garden for years and adore it, it's already multiplied and I've shared with friends and enjoyed it between pavers beneath a Magnolia.

They flower early and can keep on for up to three months. The vibrant blooms are around 3cm across and are defined by a golden eye.

What they lack for in size they more than make up for in vigour.

Primula juliae has been used in the breeding for many of the modern hybrids we see today (Wandas, Julianas and Pruhonicans among others). Discovered in around 1900 by Julia Mloskossjewicz in the Eastern Caucasus, near Tiflis. It was first shown by Mr Baker at the RHS in 1912, where it received an Award of Merit.

A beautiful moist rock garden, potted plant, fairy garden, alpine garden or edging plant. The kidney shaped, mid green leaves grow to 10cm and creep out from the roots along the ground. Combine with Snowdrops, Crocus, Mini Daffs.

Plant in a cool, part shade position that is sheltered from the hot afternoon sun – they will need some sun to bloom otherwise you will just be enjoying the leaves. In the garden, plant into humus rich, moist (but not sodden), well drained soil. In pots use a good quality potting mix and ensure there are good drainage holes. Good air flow around the plants is important. Water to establish and keep moist during active growth. Happy in a boggy soil. In pots, water regularly during active growth.
