Galanthus 'Elwes's Snowdrop'
Elwes’s Snowdrop is a vigorous choice that has a good reputation for multiplication. Each exquisite flower exhibits decorative green marks (top and bottom) and the inner petals have a cheeky flare at the end.
Galanthus elwesii is commonly known as Elwes’s Snowdrop or Giant Snowdrop. It was named in honour of Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) an English botanist who is rumoured to have bought the variety into cultivation. The flowers are quite large by comparison to most Snowdrops, growing to around 2.5cm. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit among other accolades so you know it will not only look good but exhibits strong growth.
Snowdrops or Galanthus are much loved bulbs of superb beauty.
Some gardeners are so crazy about these Snowdrops they are labelled 'Galanthophiles' and who could blame them, they are very special little blooms.
Late winter to early spring you will fall in love with the dainty flowers. Try planting them in pots, rockeries, garden beds or beneath trees. The gently arching leaves are a muted green and grow 8-20cm long, the edges slightly curved.
Grow your Snowdrops in a cool spot in well drained soil. They grow well in conditions similar to those favoured by Hellebores or Hostas. A humus rich, moist, well drained soil is ideal. They like to be moist in active growth and relatively dry in dormancy so they aren’t left to sit in water. Will gradually multiply to form clumps. Best left to naturalise and should be shaded over summer. They resent disturbance and look better and better each year, ideally planted under shrubs where they won’t be too wet, will be shaded through summer and are unlikely to be disturbed.
