Honeysuckle 'Firecracker'

Large clusters of upright florets in pink and gold tones mass from early summer to frost. As autumn sets in, decorative red berries take to the fore and the birds flock to them. The blue green leaves grow oppositely along the stems.

You could choose to let this twining, deciduous Honeysuckle ramble through trees or shrubs, along walls or fences, through pergolas or trellises, or wherever needs ornament and perfume. The stems will always twine in a clockwise direction. This robust choice will establish quickly, but can be easily pruned to keep it the size you desire.

Plant Honeysuckle in full sun to semi shade – like Clematis, they like their roots in the shade and their tendrils in the sun. Choose a moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low, they are dry tolerant once established. Beneficial insects and birds love the flowers and berries.

In cold climates it may be deciduous, the leaves will turn yellow before falling in winter. It will quickly reshoot as the weather warms.

Since the Middle Ages Honeysuckle has been in cultivation. It was often grown around the entrance, where it’s fragrance could be appreciated, but it was also said to ward off evil, and fevers. Not sure if it is still the case but it is worth a shot. And if it was bought indoors, a wedding would follow. The flowers have also had medicinal uses as a respiratory, laxative and to soothe the liver.
