Iresene 'Tricolor'

Why stick with boring green, the colouring on this plant is divine. It colour to perfection. Each waxy/glossy leaf can grow up to 10cm long. So easy and low maintenance they are virtually foolproof.

Iresine makes a great indoor house plant for a brightly lit position. In tropical/sub tropical areas it can be grown outdoors in a sheltered position. You could grow them outdoors in cooler climes, but you would need to treat them as an annual because they won’t abide frost.

Another common name for Iresene is Beefsteak Plant.

SIZE (HxW): 20-90cm x 20-90cm. Their growth will be more contained in a pot, outdoors in a sheltered, tropical to sub tropical environment they will grow to their full size they like a humus rich soil in the shade where you will get the best colour.

I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room, without turning on a light.

I NEED A DRINK: Water regularly, topping them up as the soil begins to dry out. They will cope with a fair amount of neglect, and you will know you have forgotten about them as they droop and sulk, but will quickly pep up when you apologise and add a good dose of water. More water needed spring/summer and winter requires less care.

Hailing from the tropics they appreciate some humidity – especially in homes with ducted heating/air conditioning. It isn’t as vital as for many houseplants, so you might get away without it – you will know if it is lacking as the leaf tips will turn brown. You can provide some humidity for your beloved plant, by placing them over a plate with rocks and water, this will naturally form humidity around the plant. Or if you want to get very fancy and grow a few of these tropical treats, purchasing a humidifier is a good investment – they are also good for you. Or you could grow it in a bathroom which naturally gets a good dose of steam. Or grow with other plants where the humidity will naturally form around the plants. They are also smashing in terrariums.

I WILL SURVIVE: Pinch the tips of your plant to encourage it to be lovely and bushy. You could take cuttings in spring. Indoors give the leaves a regular wipe with a soft cloth to keep them dust free and healthy.
