Penstemon Whipple's Penstemon

Dark blooms are making it big in the garden world at the moment and this is a great example. The drool inducing, plum purple, pendent bells cluster at the top of slender stems from late spring to summer.

Hailing from the Rocky Mountains, it doesn’t mind poor soils or exposed conditions. Plant in full sun to light shade and water in well, they will become dry tolerant once established. A simple to grow, semi evergreen perennial.

A nice choice to use with spring flowering bulbs as it will be emerging as the former are going into dormancy.

Remove spent flowers and foliage to tidy. Beneficial insects love the blooms. The hairy foliage tends to deter the less welcome rabbits which is good.

The plant was discovered by John Bigelow, who was on expedition with Lt. Amiel Whipple for whom the plant is named.
