If you’re looking to grow something out of the ordinary in a moist, shady spot why not give Rodgersia a go. If you grow ferns and hostas this is a great addition to the pack.

In spring the new leaves are a delicious chocolate. The unusual, divided green blushed bronze foliage has a beautiful, rough texture. They are deeply divided in up to 9 lobes and grow to around 25cm. In autumn they prepare for senescence with a nice mahogany blush.

The tall floral plumes rise above the leaves in summer. They turn from rosy pink to russet red in the autumn. After the flowers fade, the seed heads remain ornamental. They make a nice feature in a vase and can even be dried.

Hailing from moist woodland and streamside areas in the mountains of Asia, Rodgersia is best grown in a morning sun to filtered light position with a moist soil. Moderately fertile to humus rich soil are good. The more moisture they have the more sun they will tolerate. As it establishes it will grow to an impressive size and you will wonder how you ever did without it.
