Snow Crocus Advance
Soft, creamy yellow blooms with a lilac blush on the reverse and glowing orange anthers. It flowers a little later than most Snow Crocus, late August to September. There are multiple blooms from each corm, the numbers becoming more impressive as they establish. A strong grower, it naturalises well and will multiply at a moderate rate.
Crocus can act as bee hotels! In the early days of winter, bees have been known to shelter in the safe harbour of the crocus blooms over night. As the petals open and close with the sun, the bees are assured of a relaxing night inside the blooms, emerging refreshed in the morning after a good night’s rest and with a nice measure of pollen.
Crocus 'Advance' grows best in cool to Mediterranean climates where they impress in rockeries, beds, lawn plantings and pots. Plant in a sunny spot with well drained soil. Crocus will tolerate light shade, such as under deciduous trees, especially in warmer zones, but they need the sun to open their petals. They should be kept cool (by shade or mulch) in summer.
Crocus 'Advance' bulbs don't need to be lifted every year, so you can allow them to naturalise and only dig and divide as required when they become crowded after four or five years. It is a good idea to protect new growth from slugs and snails. Fertilise your Crocus annually in winter and or spring depending on your soil.
