- Botanical Name
- Begonia x hiemalis ‘Borias’ (Elatior or Rieger begonia)
- Family
- Begoniaceae
- Plant Type
- Evergreen fibrous-rooted perennial, usually grown as an indoor or sheltered patio plant
- Size (HxW)
- 25-40cm x 25-35cm
- Depth & Spacing
- Plant at the same level as in the pot. One plant per 15-20cm pot, or 25-30cm apart in a sheltered garden bed.
- Soil
- A light, free draining premium potting mix. In the garden, humus rich and well drained.
- Aspect
- Bright, indirect light indoors. Outdoors, morning sun or bright shade, out of hot afternoon sun and strong wind.
- Climate
- Indoors anywhere. Outdoors in tropical to subtropical and frost free warm temperate areas.
- Frost
- Tender
- Water
- Water when the top 2cm of mix is dry, applying water to the mix rather than the foliage. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, so never leave the pot sitting in a saucer of water.
- Fertiliser
- A liquid fertiliser for flowering plants every two weeks while in bloom.
- Flowering Time
- Autumn to spring, and often for much longer in good conditions
- After Flower Care
- Remove spent flowers and leaves regularly to keep botrytis at bay. When flowering winds down, cut stems back to around 10cm to encourage fresh growth.
- Notes
- Good air circulation and dry foliage help prevent powdery mildew, which is the main disease to watch for. Elatior begonias are hybrids between Begonia socotrana and tuberous begonias and are long flowering, but they tend to be at their best for one or two seasons before being replaced.
