Magnolia 'Exmouth'

Botanical Name: Magnolia grandiflora
Family: Magnoliaceae
Plant Type: Evergreen tree
Size (HxW): 9-12m x 3-5m
Depth & Spacing: Plant where the roots meet the trunk, with roots spread evenly below the soil surface. Space 2-5m apart.
Soil: Prefers humus rich, moist, acidic to neutral soil with good drainage. That is the ideal, but really, as long as they aren’t in boggy soils you are likely to have good success.
Aspect: Full Sun to Semi Shade. Out of strong winds is ideal. In warm climates choose a semi shade position out of the afternoon sun.
Climate: Cool to Sub Tropical
Frost: Hardy, protect while young. Ideally shelter from early spring frosts.
Water: Water to establish, (at least the first two years, be generous in summer, you don’t want to set them back) rainfall is adequate after that unless there is a prolonged dry spell. More water required in warm climates.
Fertiliser: As the tree is establishing, a simple mulch around the roots with leaf mulch is beneficial. Add a slow release fertiliser in spring and autumn for the first few years to push growth and blooms.
Flowering Time: Winter to spring.
Notes: Prune in summer as required. Protect from slugs and snails while young. They may take a year or two to establish and flower, so you need to be patient. Prune while young if you would rather a tree than a shrub.
