A great tropical looking bulb with impressive flowers. The blooms open atop strong stems in umbels of 6-12 flowers. The white flowers open from late summer into autumn with five or six weeks of show. The blooms open in succession similar to Hippeastrums. Each flower is around 8cm long. The perfume is fresh and sweet with a touch of the exotic.
The large basal leaves are lush and strappy, and semi evergreen.
Endemic to the banks of rivers and streams of tropical South Africa, they like to be kept moist, especially in active growth. If they are allowed to dry out the foliage tends to become a bit ratty.
Ideally plant Crinum moorei in fertile, humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Plant with the neck of the bulb just above the soil level. The bulbs are large and will grow up to 20cm across.
The botanical name, Crinum refers to two things. Crinum for the Greek, Krinon translating to lily. The second part of the name, moorei, honours botanist David Moore (1807-1879) who was director of Royal Dublin Society’s Botanic Garden.
