The large white sepals are paired with deep mahogany petals. The flowers tilt slightly so you get the best of both. They really are most charming as they hover above the leaves on wiry stems.
The soft green leaves are a year round feature. They are heart shaped with fine toothed edges. In spring, the new foliage emerges dark green with a bronze glow before ageing to the softer green. In autumn it changes, this time to burgundy.
Epimedium epsteinii is commonly known as Epstein's Epimedium, honouring Harold Epstein who was president of the Emeritus of the North American Rock Garden Society and cofounded Hortus Club of New York. He worked to classify Epimediums and nurtured a renowned garden packed to the gunnels with a huge variety of plants. The was originally discovered in Hunan, China.
Epimediums are clump forming rhizomatous perennials native to woodland areas. They grow best in moist, humus rich, sandy soils. Plant in a part shade to bright light position.
Epimediums are good for planting beneath trees, in shaded borders, as shady ground covers or in well cared for pots.

Fertilise and mulch Epimediums in winter, they love the soil to be rich in composting leaves so don't hold back with dumping them on when they fall in autumn. Divide your Epimedium clumps every 3-5 years and don't forget to protect new foliage from slugs and snails.

Cut back your Epimedium foliage late winter or spring, to allow the new leaves and flowers to shine. Just as you would a Hellebore/Winter Rose. Epimediums are also known as Bishop's Hats and Horny Goat Weed.
