A rare treat that makes a great ground cover for shaded areas. The glossy, deep green foliage grows to form layered clumps that are dotted with bright white flowers from early spring. The flowers are followed by flat, heart shaped, ornamental fruit. This is grown in many of the legendary woodland gardens of Europe such as Great Dixter and is in Beth Chatto’s top 100 plants.
The flowers and new foliage emerge around the same time. As the season progresses the leaves become larger.
This semi evergreen perennial is native to moist woodlands in Northern Turkey. It thrives where plants such as Winter Roses and ferns thrive. Grow in moderately fertile to humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Plant in a part shade to filtered light position. A nice ground cover that doesn’t need much care. You can leave the foliage year round, but it looks better with a late winter/early spring prune to allow the new foliage to shine. Water to establish and keep moist during growth. Will set seed at a moderate pace and the seedlings highly valued.
