Astilbe ‘Washington’ has gorgeous plumes of white flowers midsummer to autumn. The flowers are teamed with lush, fern like, deep green foliage. It makes a handsome choice for a semi shade spot. They will even grow in boggy soils.
The flowers of Astilbe can be picked for vases where they last incredibly well, you can even dry them.
The flowers will turn bronze with the cooler weather and remain beautifully ornamental through autumn and winter, even after the foliage fades.
Astilbe grow best in part shade, filtered light or morning sun positions – think Hostas and ferns. They will grow in full shade but won’t flower their best. In sunny positions you will need to ensure they have adequate moisture or they tend to become straggly.
Plant Astilbe into a humus rich, moist soil, an acid PH is preferred but not demanded. Water in your Astilbe and keep them moist in active growth. You could add a little mulch in summer to help retain moisture around the roots.
Astilbes thrive in moist soils, their handsome, fern like foliage looks wonderful in a woodland garden or shady border.
