A stunning petite orchid that is hard to find and worth a grow. Each stunning bloom is around 2-3cm across and are born from pseudobulbs a half to quarter of their size. Once mature, in around two to three years, they flower easily April to May.
The crystalline petals have blushes of green and purple. You can hold this beauty in the palm of your hand with space to spare. In the instagram craze of miniature orchids this is a super star.
There are over a thousand species of Dendrobium Orchids, this one is from the Yunnan province of China where it grows on the underside of branches in the mountainous subtropical highland forests where the average temperature is 18C. There is monsoonal weather summer to autumn when it receives dense fog and rains – as it grows on the underside of the branch the flowers won’t fill up with water – clever flowers. It was discovered in 2008 and is similar to D. wangliangii.
An intermediate grower for a filtered light position. In cold climates they will need some protection from winter rains. They like their roots to be crowded in. They require filtered light. Water and fertilise regularly in spring and summer. Keep them on the dry side in autumn and winter, but not so dry that the canes shrivel.
Ideal to affix to bark/slab or in the protected crevice of a rock or tree. 4C to 35C temperature range, preferring cool. Can grow indoors or in a terrarium.
