Salvia ‘Vatican Pink’ is a big impact choice. From bud to bloom, the show can go on for up to five months or more. The statuesque, upright stems are massed with baby pink flowers and create good vertical interest. More compact and handsome than the species, they love cool climates and bloom for an age even in poor soils.
Also known as Clary Sage, the species (Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica) has been grown as a herb for many years. This new selection has stronger growth and longer flowering prowess, and more colour. A short lived perennial, or biennial, the seed will fall naturally and reliably self sow, or can be collected for sowing. It is by no means invasive and easily pulled to share with friends or move elsewhere if one pops up where you’d rather it didn’t.
The handsome, rough, aromatic leaves are mid green and grow to a hefty 23cm long. The flowers last really well in a vase.
Grow Salvia ‘Vatican Pink' in a sunny location in well drained soil. Salvias are dry tolerant once established and look wonderful in beds, borders or dry gardens. They have a vigorous growth and are easy care. It is biennial and will self sow, or the seed can be collected.
Dead head spent flowers after the first flush to encourage re-bloom.
This Saliva is not just ornamental. It can be used to flavour dishes or in teas. It is also used by the perfume industry for its sclareol resin. Pregnant women should avoid using it as a herb/consumable. 7
