Quick to grow and establish with masses of marshmallow pink flowers that last for months on end. This upright, woody, evergreen shrub is an asset in the garden and can do quite well in a container.
The Australian breeding of a South African species has resulted in a vigorous, tough plant with plenty of blooms. The blooms are bigger, longer lasting and the bush is more compact and well branched. Tolerant of poor soils, coastal conditions, dry and frost.
The long flowering time is attractive for beneficial pollinators such as butterflies and bees. Useful in borders as a filler and to add structure.
Plant in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny position. Water well to establish, it can take four to six weeks for a plants roots to go beyond the potting mix and penetrate the surrounding soil and gain access to its moisture and nutrients, so they should be watered well initially. Dry tolerant once they have settled in. In pots, ensure you water regularly during the warmer months, as potting mix is perfectly drained it can dry out very quickly, and while they are tough they do need some care.
Anisodontea ‘Mirembe’ responds well to pruning, and can be used has a low informal hedge or even a topiary. Ideally pruned late winter, then add a little fertiliser and water in.
