DELPHINIUM CULTURAL NOTES
SITUATION:
Delphiniums are easily grown, frost tolerant plants that like a sunny position in a rich, well
drained soil. We recommend you prepare your garden beds before planting by working through well rotted animal manure, compost or complete fertiliser. Plant Delphiniums out of strong winds to avoid damage. The tall stems may require staking, you can do this at the time of planting to avoid root damage.
TIME OF PLANTING:
Winter to spring. Plant with the top of the crowns just below the surface and space 50cm
apart. WARNING: When planting Delphinium crowns make sure to place snail bait or sawdust or beer or whatever you use around the plants as snails and slugs are very fond of their young and tender shoots! Delphinium Sherwood Series grows 1m high and 20-50cm wide.
GENERAL CARE:
Water to establish and keep moist while they are actively growing. Do not let Delphiniums sit in water as they are prone to crown rot in poorly drained soils. Keep the area free of weeds to reduce nutrient competition and promote healthy plants. Top dress with some slow release fertiliser in spring and summer or liquid feed every 4-5 weeks through the growing season. Cut Delphinium flower stems to the ground and fertilise them once they have finished flowering (around January) and you should have a rebloom in autumn. Following any signs of rust on the leaves, remove, or spray with an appropriate fungicide (organic preferred). When used as a cut flower, you can dip the stems in hot water before putting into a vase, this will extend their shelf life.
