A heritage variety that is much sought after but hard to come by. This early season bloomer has plenty of vigour and appeal.
The dark crimson, heavily scented blooms of Peony ‘Rubra Plena’ grow up to 20cm across and mature with a purple blush. The flowers open against deep green foliage. It produces so many flowers you may want to add a bit of support, or take a few for the vase.
The exotic flowers of Peony Roses have been cherished since the 5th century and during their long and illustrious history, Peonies have been the flower favoured by Emperors and Gods. Fortunately, they are now accessible to the common gardener.
Peonies are vigorous, long lasting garden plants with opulent blooms that make wonderful cut flowers.
Why not spoil yourself and enjoy an abundant spring to summer display of intoxicating loveliness. Peonies look exotic and temperamental and yet they are remarkably hardy and grow well in cool to temperate Australian gardens.
You may have to be patient for at least a year before you can enjoy the flowers of Peony Roses, they resent having their roots disturbed so flowering is delayed, but the wait will be justified for many years to come as they are extremely long lived.
Peony Roses need cold winters (3-5C at least) for best flowers. Peony roses are heavy feeders, so you need to fertilise them regularly. They also like lime, and lot’s of it, so be sure to indulge them.
