The flowers are cream and similar to a frangipani. The blooms open above the tree like branches. Each bloom is 11cm across. The flowers have a sweet fragrance and open on mature plants (1-2m tall).
The trunk is covered in a garrison of spikes. The trunk has a slight bow to it, and is topped with long, green leaves. It looks a bit like a tall pineapple! The leaves are deep green, 25-40cm long. The spikes grow 1-6cm long.
The Madagascar Palm is not really a palm, although it looks like one. It is part of the succulent family. It is even one of the easiest succulents to grow! It makes a wonderful potted plant, indoors or out.
Grow in moderately fertile, well drained soil in a warm position out of hot, afternoon sun. In pots, use a well drained, good quality cactus and succulent potting mix and grow in part shade or bright light indoors. Water to establish then only if rainfall is low. Allow the soil in pots to almost dry out before watering again.
Madagascar Palm will grow faster in warmer climates.
