Small white summer flowers followed by unusual, green spiny balloon like inflated balls. The flowers are pendant and open freely in clusters. The white colouring is punctuated with purple coronas. The blooms might be small but there are lots of them.
The seed pods are bright green with soft spines on the outer. They are inflated with air and contain seeds. The seed pods make an interesting addition to cut flower arrangements and are popular with florists. Each pod is 7cm long.
Swan Plant is named because the pods resemble a swan. It originates in South Africa. The branches are loose with mid green, narrow leaves along them. The caterpillars of the Wanderer butterfly feed from the leaves.
Grow in a sunny position in any well drained soil. They are easy care.
Be wary when handling Swan Plant as the sap can irritate sensitive skin.
