A dwarf, Tibetan Astilbe is a beauty with compact foliage and strong growth. It makes a wonderful, blooming, woodland or shade garden addition. You could try mingling with Winter Roses to keep the floral show going.

The feathery, lilac pink flowers open in their masses to form tightly packed plumes from midsummer to autumn. The flowers reach above the foliage on upright stems. The handsome, mid green leaves have a decorative red flush whilst young.

Astilbe ‘Pumila’ holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit so is certified for strong growth.

Astilbe will grow to form nice clumps of handsome foliage that looks wonderful as part of a woodland garden or shady border. Astilbe is a later flowering variety than most Astilbe. The flowers of Astilbe can be picked for vases and they will last well. If you leave the blooms on the plant, you can either remove them when they have browned or leave them on as the seed heads have ornamental value.

Astilbe grow best in part shade to morning sun positions. The warmer your climate, the more shade they will need. Plant into a humus rich, moist, well drained soil. Water your Astilbe to establish and then keep moist in active growth. Adding a little mulch in summer will help to retain moisture around the roots. If they dry, out they tend to become straggly. This species is more tolerant of dry than most Astilbe but they will still grow better with moisture.
