Growing to 120cm, this flower is set to impress. The tight, ball shaped bloom is made up of violet purple, star shaped flowers. The flowers last up to 6 weeks in the garden. The blooms are 250-300mm circumference. Best planted in clumps for effect.
Allium 'Gladiator' blooms are suitable for picking and will last well. The blooms can also be dried.
The upright, strappy foliage fades as the flowers emerge. Tip: Plant Alliums amongst perennials to keep the foliage hidden.
Allium 'Gladiator' holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Alliums are tough, hardy, and beautiful too! They are members of the onion family, and when bruised the foliage smells just like onions. Plant Alliums into well drained soil in a sunny position. The soil needs to be sharply drained. Add a little blood and bone at the time of planting.
Alliums need at least six hours sun and a warm spot in the garden to thrive. As the stems are tall, they should be sheltered from strong winds. Plant to a depth of around four times the height of the bulb. New foliage should be protected from slugs and snails.
Once established you simply add some blood and bone to your Allium each spring. You can relax and leave them in the ground year after year and simply enjoy the flowers. The blooms are long lasting and make excellent cut flowers. In fact, in a cool spot in the house, with regularly trimmed stems and water changes, they will last up to 10 weeks! The blooms also dry well and will last indefinitely.
