The long flowering blooms open at the top of the striking red, upright stems with mid green foliage. The flowers emerge in tangerine shades, changing to crimson red as the day progresses. Each bloom is around 5cm across.
Evening Primrose ‘Sunset Boulevard’ can be grown in the garden or in pots. It is well suited to hot dry beds. Dead head spent flowers to encourage repeat blooms.
They need a spot with good drainage and a nice dose of sun. If they are left to sit in water they tend to rot – like many plants. The plants grow in a bushy clump of upright stems. They are successful in gardens and containers.
Oenothera is commonly known as Evening Primrose, though the flowers open in the daylight. Try growing in rock gardens, towards the front of beds and borders, along paths or even in a pot.
The petals are edible and make a pretty addition to a salad.
