Golden yellow petals with a copper red blush on the reverse. The inner petals are solid yellow, so when it opens it is just like a golden sun.

The leaves of Kolpakowshi's Tulip are grey green with a gentle curl and lie almost flat to the ground. These tulips will produce up to 3 stems per bulb.

Tulipa kolpakowskiana hails from the mountainous regions of Asia. They are commonly known as Sun Tulips, and live up to their name as they grow quite will in hot, dry soil through dormancy, they do like a cool winter though. Plant them where they will get a lot of spring sun, as the petals open and close with the light.

They are named for the plant explorer, Kolpakowski, who, with fellow explorer Ostrowski discovered a number of Tulip species. It was first noted in 1844. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Species Tulips have a more relaxed or whimsical feel than the common hybridized varieties. They are just as easy to grow. If planted in a well drained soil in a spot that does not get too hot over summer then the bulbs can be left in the ground for many years.

Species Tulips are ideal for rock gardens, lawn plantings, pots or towards the front of a border.
