Sturdy, upright stems, packed with flowers for three months or more! Purple Top Verbena is also known as Tall Verbena, and both are accurate descriptions of this stunning plant. Hailing from South America, it likes a hot spot in the garden and will flower and flower and flower. Though in saying that we have one in morning sun and it began flowering in September and is still going in April so they are quite versatile.

Purple Top Verbena is a vigorous grower and will soon forma nice clump. The leaves grow low on the stems, leaving the flowers up above to show off on their slender, branching stems. The mauve purple cymes are around 5cm across, and there are plenty of them.

The blooms are suitable for picking. If you do this a lot, the stems tend to grow shorter and the plant will expand outward, which isn’t so bad either!

Purple Top Verbena is tolerant of poor soils, and once established will tough out dry conditions. It combines well with grasses or toward the back of perennial borders.

Verbena’s are renown for their flowering prowess and easy care. They are both heat and cold tolerant plants and they are very attractive to beneficial insects.

Plant Purple Top Verbena in a sunny location in well drained soil. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low. Fertilise regularly to keep the blooms coming. A short lived perennial (around three years) with viable seed.
