Verbascum are a great garden showpiece.
The flowers are bright shade and open for months from spring to summer. The show doesn't end there though, the blooms are followed by handsome seed pods that mature to a handsome red black shade. Verbascum blooms can be picked for indoor display.
The upright stems of Verbascum provide great architectural interest.
The foliage of Verbascum grows close to the ground. The leaves are deep green and oval shaped.
Verbascum phoeniceum is a more compact variety perfect for the middle of beds or smaller gardens.
Plant your Verbascum in a full sun to part shade position. They thrive in any well drained, soils, even alkaline conditions. In poorly drained soils the plants tend to rot. Choose an area out of harsh winds or be prepared to stake. Water in, then only if rainfall is low, dry tolerant once established.
Verbascums are commonly known as Mullein. These are biennial plants, the seeds are viable and should be allowed to fall to produce plants into the future.
