Sweet Peas 'Now or Never'

Now is the time to give Sweet Peas a grow. The cerise pink petals are an absolute stand out and the fragrance is oh so sweet.

Who could resist the ambrosial abundance of Sweet Peas? It is impossible to get enough of these romantic, old fashioned favourites.

We are continually searching for the best plant varieties out there and in our quest we have uncovered the most impressive Sweet Peas yet. ‘Sweet Seduction Sweet Peas’ were bred for the cut flower market; they are vigorous with long, strong stems and flower freely, exuding a delightful cloud of perfume. We are totally impressed with their vigour and lovely long stems.

Sweet Peas are ideally planted around Anzac Day, then there is around a 12 week wait from planting to bloom. They grow through the short days of winter and will take off in spring. They are frost hardy so there is no need to worry about the cold.

Sweet Peas need a support to grow on; you can use tee pees, bamboo poles, plastic or jute netting, an old gate, wire mesh etc. the options are endless.

They will produce plenty of flowers if they have a nutrient rich base. It is a good idea to prepare their soil by digging through some pelletised manure such as dynamic lifter, superphosphate and a handful of garden lime before planting out. Their ideal PH is around 7.

Plant your Sweet Peas 1-2cm deep in humus rich, moist well drained soil. Germination takes one to two weeks. We plant two to a hole for a nice dense display. You can sow them directly, or start them off in a pot, then plant out when there is about a weeks growth. Freshly germinated seed is a magnet for snails/slugs and birdlife, so it’s a good idea to ensure they have adequate protection.

Plant in a sunny position and ensure good drainage and air flow. You can pinch out the centre stem once the plant has two sets of leaves to encourage good branching. With good care you can have around a hundred flowers from just one seed.

Once your Sweet Peas are up and growing you need to cut the flowers regularly – the more you pick the more you will have. This is fantastic as you are able to fill your home with the gorgeous, perfumed blooms. Tie the stems vertically as they grow so they are well supported. You can add a liquid fertiliser that is low in nitrogen once they are growing but in good soil it shouldn’t be necessary. They have deep roots that shoot straight down.

Make sure you keep your Sweet Peas well watered, if they dry out they are likely to go to seed sooner. If the flowers are allowed to develop into seed heads the plants will stop blooming, so keep on picking. Leave the last flowers to set seed, they will grow true to type.
