Giant Tree Echium

Botanical Name: Echium pininana
Family: Boraginaceae
Plant Type: Biennial or short lived perennial
Size (HxW): 200-400cm x 60-90cm
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same level as in the pots with roots spread evenly below the soil, space 60-90cm apart.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Tolerant of poor soils. They may topple in loose soils so require staking.
Aspect: Full sun to light shade
Climate: Cool to Sub Tropical
Frost: Hardy
Water: Water to establish, it takes plants 4-6 weeks for their roots to penetrate the surrounding soil, so they need regular water, then only if rainfall is low during active growth.
Fertiliser: A light application of a general purpose fertiliser in spring if you have poor soil, they are not heavy feeders.
Flowering Time: Summer
After Flower Care: Once the seed has dropped, the stems can be cut to the ground and the plant will die back. In its first year, seed produces a handsome rosette of silver green, hairy foliage, a worthy feature. In the second year, the blooms return. Once you have a few in situ you will be able to enjoy blooms every year. In cold climates seed is best collected for sowing.
Notes: The flowers should be left to set seed for future generations – the birds will also enjoy this seed visiting them. New growth should be protected from slugs/snails.
