- Plant 10cm deep and space 10cm apart, pointed end up. Like most bulbs they look best planted in groups.
- Soil
- Moderately fertile to humus rich, moist well drained soil. Adaptable to pretty much any soil with good drainage, they can rot in boggy soils.
- Aspect
- Full sun, they like it hot! Though in saying that they are quite amenable and some shade will be fine.
- Climate
- Cool to Subtropical. (in warmer zones humidity may lead to disease so they could need to be treated as annuals).
- Frost
- Half Hardy. If your ground freezes hard you can help protect them with a layer of winter mulch.
- Water
- Water in to establish, then only if rainfall is low during active growth. Keep relatively dry during dormancy. They are endemic to hot, dry climates.
- Fertiliser
- Apply a well balanced fertiliser each spring, if necessary (low feeders). Flowering Time: Mid to late spring
- After Flower Care
- These bulbs may be left undisturbed for years and will gradually multiply, it is important to let the foliage die back naturally. Lift and divide as overcrowding occurs, every five or so years depending on conditions – you will know when they are overcrowded as flowering will diminish. After lifting, replant soon after, or store in a dry, airy position for replanting in autumn.
- Notes
- Ixia look best when planted in clumps, so if you are putting them in the garden/lawn, put three in each hole for the best display. In pots they look their best when placed closely.
