Thank you for purchasing potted tulips at the Tesselaar Tulip Festival. We are sure they will be happy with you in their new home! Here are our top tips on how to care for your tulips: 1. Water them. Potting mix is designed to be perfectly drained, so in hot weather you may need to water them daily. To test if it’s needed, simply put your finger into the mix, if it is dry then you need to water. Keeping them moist will help your flowers to last longer and the bulbs to stay healthy. 2. You can choose to leave the tulips in their pot, move them to a bigger/more decorative pot or plant them into the garden. If you move them, do it with care so the roots and stems aren’t bruised or broken. You can bring your pots indoors too, just remember if you are running heating inside, the flowers won’t last as long. 3. If you would like to keep your bulbs for next year, it is ideal to add some fertiliser. Do this now, any general purpose slow release or liquid fertiliser is good. This will feed the bulb so it can produce another flower. Ensure you keep them watered until the leaves begin to yellow, then lift and store them somewhere cool or put the pot out of the weather until next autumn. We recommend planting them in the ground around Mother’s Day. Visit our Tulip Resources pages for more growing tips.
