Snail Vine Blue

Botanical: Vigna Caracalla Syn. Cochliasanthus caracalla
Plant Type: Semi Evergreen Climber
Size (HxW): 2-8m x 30-100cm
Depth & Spacing: Plant at the same level as in the pot with roots spread evenly below soil surface. Plant 30-100cm apart, their spread depends on how and what you train them on.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich, moist, well drained soil is ideal.
Aspect: Full Sun
Climate: Cool to Tropical
Frost: Sensitive. If damaged, leave affected growth on the plant until all the danger of frost has gone, then cut back and it will re-grow in spring.
Water: Water to establish and keep moist in active growth.
Fertiliser: Apply a liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth.
Flowering Time: Summer to autumn, and into winter in warmer zones.
After Flower Care: You can cut the tendrils back in summer, when it has reached the size you require. This will promote more flowers – this side growth can be a distraction for the plant, just like with your beans or strawberries – so if it is the flowers you are after then it is a good idea to prune.
Notes: Grow this climber on a trellis, pergola or some other support. Be wary of aphids. In cold climates add a dry mulch of straw in winter dormancy to help protect the plant. They can be slow to establish, but you can expect more vigorous growth after the first season.
