An Australian bred selection with long lasting, sumptuous, ashen pink flowers. The cream stamens contrast against the overcast colouring like an explosion of fire crackers.
The deep green, serrated, leathery leaves are overlaid with a handsome, smoky haze that gives them a quiet distinction in the garden. Both the flowers and the leaves unfurl on stout stems with a strong, red blush.
Helleborus x sternii is a cross of Helleborus argutifolius (AKA Corsican Hellebore) and Helleborus lividus (AKA Majorcan Hellebore). This is a selected form that has been patiently crossed over many years by local, Hellebore doyen Peter Leigh.
They are strong growing but may take a season to settle in before flowering, from then on though they will power on for decades. They need a well drained soil and appreciate a good dose of compost.
Winter Rose, or Hellebores are durable and versatile in the garden. They grow best beneath deciduous trees or in filtered light or part shade (they don't tend to flower as well in heavy shade).
You can choose to cut the old foliage back hard in autumn to allow the new flowers and foliage to shine. This will also the plants vigorous and healthy.
You could try picking and floating the blooms of Winter Rose in a shallow glass dish for a sophisticated centre piece that will bring colour inside for the winter months.
