Crocus speciosus means ‘the showy crocus’. The patterned, lilac blooms open in autumn, without the modesty of the leaves. The narrow foliage follows in winter and lasts into spring. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit so you know it can be relied upon. They multiply at a nice, steady pace.
Species Crocus grow best in Cool to Mediterranean climates where they impress in rockeries, beds, lawn plantings and pots. Plant in a sunny spot with well drained soil. Crocus will tolerate light shade, such as under deciduous trees, especially in warmer zones, but they need the sun to open their petals. They should be kept cool (by shade or mulch) in summer.
Species Crocus bulbs don't need to be lifted every year, so you can allow them to naturalise and only dig and divide as required when they become crowded after four or five years. It is a good idea to protect new growth from slugs and snails. Fertilise your Crocus annually in winter and or spring depending on your soil.
