Gold Shallots have a mild taste that combines the sweet flavour of onion with a nice hint of garlic. They are ideal in French dishes and delicious in soups or stews.
The flavour of Shallots is valuable in cooking as it has a similar, but less overpowering taste than onions.
Shallots are easy to grow, requiring a well drained soil and a sunny spot. Each bulb will produce an impressive 6-12 new bulbs in a season. It is a good idea to keep your shallots moist during growth, they have a short root system so regular watering is important for good bulb growth. It is also good to fertilise your Shallots well for best production.
Reap what you have sown in summer and enjoy them in your cooking. If you can resist, try and keep a couple of bigger bulbs back for replanting next season. Shallot bulbs will store well for long periods.
