Soil
Humus rich, sandy, well drained soil is ideal.

Part shade/morning sun to filtered light with protection from cold, dry winds. They are more tolerant of sun when they get consistent moisture. Shade is most important in summer, when the leaves are likely to burn.
Climate
Cool to Mediterranean
Frost
Hardy, although new growth may be marked by heavy frost, just prune after it has passed.
Water
Water to establish and keep relatively moist in active growth. They will adapt to both moist and dry environments once established. Fertiliser: Apply a well balanced fertiliser then mulch in winter.
Flowering Time
Spr to Sum
After Flower Care
Prune out spent flowers to tidy if desired. Late winter/early spring remove last season’s foliage, as you would a Winter Rose (Hellebore), this allows the blooms and new foliage (with colourful blush) to show off. If you’d rather leave it on, no problem, just prune out any untidy leaves, the new stuff usually pushes its way to the top so you can still enjoy it.
Notes
Protect new foliage from slugs and snails. They will slowly form colonies through underground rhizomes. Divide your Epimedium clumps every 3-5 years, after flowering has finished, be gentle with the roots. Leave 2/3 of the foliage on when doing this to encourage root production in the new plants. Plants will set seed, but as they hybridise easily so are unlikely to flower true to type.
