Botanical Name: Curcuma alismatifolia
Family: Zingiberaceae
Plant Type: Rhizomatous Perennial
Size (HxW): 30-60cm x 30-50cm
Depth & Spacing: If you are potting, use a decent size pot, their rhizomes multiply laterally so 20cm or more is ideal to begin.
Soil: Moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil is ideal.
Aspect: Full sun to semi shade. Shelter from cold and or drying winds.
Climate: Cool to Tropical
Frost: Tender
Water: Water well to establish (for around 4-6 weeks to allow their roots time to penetrate the surrounding soil) then keep moist in active growth. They have underground rhizomes that store water. In pots more watering may be required as potting mix is perfectly drained.
Fertiliser: Apply a well balanced fertiliser late spring with the emerging foliage. Allow the leavers to senesce naturally as they will fuel the rhizomes for next year’s display. In the garden mulch well to help with water retention.
Flowering Time: Summer to autumn
After Flower Care: Remove spent flowers and browned foliage to tidy.
Notes: Winter dormant, can be left in the pot, begin watering again in late winter/spring. Divide as required in summer.
