A nice little upright clumper with dramatic leaves and flowers. Japanese Bugbane (Cimicifuga japonica ) is sure to turn heads wherever it is grown. A must for collectors.
The tall, dark and handsome flower stems grow to 90cm. They are topped with racemes (to 35cm) of pink buds that open to fragrant, white, fuzzy flowers from late summer to autumn. The fuzzy wands look wonderful waving over the foliage. The show is extended as the stems remain attractive with seed heads.
The dark green, glossy leaves grow up to 75 cm long and are lobed, similar to a maple. They emerge from early spring and stick around until autumn.
Japanese Bugbane are wonderful woodland plants that thrive in humus rich, moist soils. Part shade is ideal but with enough water they cope with a fair amount of sun as long as you avoid the afternoon.
Cimicifuga are commonly known as Bugbane, Cohosh and snakeroot. This variety is endemic to Japan. It will take a season or so to establish and grow to its best.
