American Cornflower grows well in sunny, dry positions, flowering through the summer with ease. The lavender pink flowers open freely through the summer and will put on a longer show if dead headed. But it isn't just the flowers that are a feature, their fuzzy buds are also rather dapper.
American Cornflowers are good in borders, beds or containers.
Grow American Cornflowers in a sunny position in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. They are quite tolerant of poor soils, and if the soil is too rich they may become leggy and need to be staked. Water in, Centaurea become dry tolerant once established.
Centaurea phrygia is commonly known as American Cornflower or Wig Knapweed. They do not grow well in coastal locations.
