Crowded sprays of fully double, deepest ruby red flowers. The spectacular blooms are on lovely long stems that are perfect for picking.
The blooms of Aquilegia 'Double Rubies' are just gorgeous, they face outward and are spurless, so look a bit like teeny tiny Dahlias.
Aquilegias are cottage garden essentials with sweet flowers and delightfully lacy, fern like foliage. They make a beautiful foil for the fading spring flowering bulbs - as their fresh foliage begins growing in early spring.
Aquilegias thrive in light to moderate shade, though with sufficient moisture will grow in full sun. Plant into humus rich, moist, well drained soil.
After the initial flowering has finished, you can cut the stems back to the basal foliage to encourage future blooms. This will have the foliage lovely and lush right up to frost. Leave the last flowers of the season to form seeds for future generations of plants. The seedlings are unlikely to flower true to type as these plants hybridise easily.
Aquilegias are suitable for growing towards the front of a lightly shaded border, in massed plantings or large containers.
