A totally garden worthy plant that flowers and flowers and flowers. The upright stems are covered in vivid purple flowers that power through summer and autumn. You will have pickable blooms from December to around May. Verbena rigida is lovely and compact and the upright stems are great for structure as well as colour.
Verbena rigida is commonly known as Rigid Verbena or Slender Vervain and it holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance.
Verbena rigida will spread through underground rhizomes which wonderful thing because you usually get a few extras that you can leave in situ or share with family and friends. We have found it isn’t bothered by our frosts – but if yours are really heavy it might be an idea to add some mulch in winter.
Verbena rigida is a strong grower and will soon forma nice clump. The leaves grow low on the stems, leaving the flowers up above to show off on their slender, branched stems.
Verbena rigida is tolerant of poor soils, and once established will tough out dry conditions too. Great in cottage gardens, or in combination with grasses, it’s magical with silver foliage plants such as Artemisia too, ah it is just so versatile and giving.
Verbena’s are very attractive to butterflies and bees. Verbena’s are renown for their flowering prowess and easy care. They are both heat and cold tolerant plants.
Plant Verbena rigida in a sunny location in well drained soil. Water to establish, then only if rainfall is low. Fertilise regularly to keep the blooms coming.
