Tall, dark and handsome. Beautiful, glossy, heart shaped leaves with a fine-looking, veined texture. The long stems have a deep mahogany blush.
Homalomena are commonly known as Shield Plants or Queen of Hearts.
SIZE (HxW): 20-60cm x 20-60cm
I SEE THE LIGHT: S Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room without turning on a light. If you only have artificial light, they will need about eight hours a day. You will get the best colour from a brightly lit position.
I NEED A DRINK: Water fairly freely spring/summer and less in winter – every other week. It likes to remain consistently moist, but will forgive you if you forget occasionally – their foliage will yellow and let you know if they are parched. If you leave them to sit in water they tend to rot.
They appreciate some humidity – especially in homes with ducted heating/air conditioning. It isn’t as vital as for many houseplants, so you might get away without it – you will know if it is lacking as the leaf tips will turn brown. But, you can provide some humidity for your beloved plant, by placing them over a plate with rocks and water, this will naturally form humidity around the plant. Or if you want to get very fancy and grow a few of these tropical treats, purchasing a humidifier is a good investment – they are also good for you. Or you could grow it in a bathroom which naturally gets a good dose of steam. Or grow with other plants where the humidity will naturally form around the plants. They are also smashing in terrariums.
In cool climates it may go dormant over winter, let them be (no food or water) until they start to shoot again. If you don’t want this to happen keep it in a nice warm spot and add some humidity (16-30C).
I WILL SURVIVE: : In pots choose a good quality potting mix to ensure they have the drainage they need. They like a decent sized pot as they have a deep root system. Choose an option with drainage holes, or be promise to be careful with watering - they don’t like to sit in boggy soils. A diluted liquid fertiliser in spring and summer will keep them happy and healthy. You will only need to repot if they are root bound, every few years. Wipe the leaves with a soft cloth to keep them free of dust.
