The olive green leaves have a metallic glean which makes them appear both buff and glossy in different lights. Rarely seen, easy to care for and much sought after.
Philodendrons are good sized plant with a nice tropical vibe. They make terrific air purifiers and are easy care.
Total tree huggers, in their native wilds of South America they grow up and along tree trunks and branches, clinging on with aerial roots. Their name ‘stems’ from this Phileo – to love and Dendron – tree. It will grow into a low shrub by itself, but to achieve maximum height you will need to add a growing pole/post, or tip prune to keep them compact.
SIZE: 30-120cm x 30-70cm.
I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room without turning on a light. If you only have artificial light, they will need about eight to ten hours a day – so good for the office. In dull light you won’t get the amazing colour.
WATER NEEDS: Water fairly freely spring/summer and less in winter – every other week. Allow the top of the soil of the pot to dry out before watering again.
Humidity isn’t vital, but they are more likely to thrive with it. You can add a pebble and water dish under the plant, combine it with other plants or purchase a humidifier – a good investment if you are growing a few plants and have air con/heating, you will have a happier plant and bigger leaves.
I WILL SURVIVE: Keep the leaves clean with a regular wipe – this will keep them looking good and growing well. Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every other month spring/summer. Keep them clear of cold draughty positions or they will sulk. They don’t mind being a bit pot bound, as required you can increase the pot size, gradually, spring is the best time for this.
Pinch out the growth tips to keep them bushy and full, you can even use these as tip cuttings.
