Heart shaped mid green leaves that become more beautiful as they grow, with perforations (fenestrations) forming on the leaves. A great choice for beginners. Quick to grow and establish and highly sought after.
Similar to the Monstera, but much smaller, it hails from Asia not South America.
Total tree huggers, in their native wilds of Malaysia and Thailand they grow up and along tree trunks and branches, clinging on with aerial roots.
You can pinch yours to keep it as a low plant without any need for support, or you can add a growing frame/stick and allow them to climb a little higher. Or grow in a hanging basket/pot and allow them to thrill and spill from the sides.
SIZE (HxW): 30-100cm x 20-40cm.
I SEE THE LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is ideal. You should be able to read during the day in their position in the room without turning on a light. If you only have artificial light, they will need about eight to ten hours a day – so good for the office. If there isn’t enough light they won’t develop the fenestrations (holes in the leaf).
I NEED A DRINK: Water fairly freely spring/summer and less in winter – every other week. Water well, then allow the top of the soil of the pot to dry out before watering again.
Humidity isn’t vital, but they are more likely to thrive with it. You can add a pebble and water dish under the plant, combine it with other plants or purchase a humidifier – a good investment if you are growing a few plants and have air con/heating. You will have a happier plant and bigger leaves.
I WILL SURVIVE: Keep the leaves clean with a regular wipe – this will keep them looking good and growing well. : In pots or hanging baskets, choose a good quality potting mix to ensure they have the drainage they need. Choose an container with drainage holes, or be promise to be careful with watering - they don’t like to sit in boggy soils. A diluted liquid fertiliser in spring and summer every fortnight will keep them happy and healthy. Keep them clear of cold draughty positions or they will sulk. Repot gradually in spring, they don’t mind being a bit pot bound.
