A dynamite, compact Helenium with first class branching and masses of vivid, ruby red blooms. The central disk matures to a rich chocolate that sets off the russet petals. These seed heads can remain after the petals have fallen for winter interest. Of course that is if you can resist cutting them for the vase.
Helenium 'Rubinzwerg’ (German) translates to Ruby Dwarf, a reflection of its colour and compact nature. It holds the prestigious RHS Award so you know it can be relied upon.
In beds and borders, plant in groups for an amazing colour show late summer to autumn. They look a treat in combination with ornamental grasses and perennials such as Salvias and Phlomis. Once the petals fall, the spent flower cones (seed heads) will remain ornamental into winter.
Keep the soil moist for best flowers and plant in a sunny position. The soil needs to be well drained and humus rich is ideal. In summer, remove spent flower heads to encourage even more blooms and keep them coming into autumn. The flowers tend to grow larger in areas where there are cool nights.
Good companions include Crocosmia, Dahlias such as 'Bishop of Llandaff', Monarda, ornamental grasses, Salvia or Alstroemerias. In ideal conditions, the colony will gradually increase year after year.
Enjoy the flowers of Heleniums in the garden or in a vase.
Heleniums are commonly known as Sneezeweed because their dried foliage was once a substitute for snuff. They aren’t a cause of hay fever!
