This fabulous Wisteria will repeat flower in spring and summer. The massing, pendent racemes of softly fragrant, lilac purple flowers are more compact (10-15cm) and heavily laden than standard forms. It is a commendably restrained variety with less rampant top growth so is easy to grow and care for.
You can train your Wisteria ‘Amethyst Falls’ along a fence, wall, as a standard on a post, through a tree, an archway, a pergola or trail down an embankment, retaining wall or rockery. They stems cling by twining anti clockwise through their chosen support. Wisteria ‘Amethyst Falls’ can even be grown in pots, where it will remain more contained and refrained.
The soft green foliage is lush and abundant along the twining stems. W. frutescens originates in North America, where most of the more readily available forms hail from the Asiatic region (W. sinensis and W. floribunda). Fertilised flowers are followed by brown, flattened pods that last into winter.
Plant Wisteria in moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. Ideal in a full sun to part shade position. Water well to establish, it takes around 4-6 weeks of regular watering for roots to penetrate the surrounding soil, they are dry tolerant once established. Flowers open from spring Oct/Nov and repeat flush through summer. Prune lightly in autumn, after flowering.
