Achillea are great garden plants. They produce plenty of flowers without a lot of fuss and don’t mind the hot or a bit of dry either. Humidity though may cause issues with mildew.
Achillea are tolerant of poor soils and like a sunny position, they are easy going and even prosper in a pot.
The dark green leaves have soft, silver hairs, they form a dense clump that is great for suppressing those nasty weeds, or for preventing soil erosion.
In good soil it can form clumps at a steady pace and should be divided every three years or so. Plant in full sun and keep moist in active growth. Clay soils are not a problem. It can set seed a moderate rate which can stay in situ or be lifted and relocated or shared.
Achillea is commonly known as Sneezewort or Yarrow. The botanical name is Achillea ptarmica. Achillea is named for the Greek mythological hero who found healing qualities in these plants to stem the flow of blood. Ptarmica is from the Greek, ptario which means to sneeze. When the foliage is crushed it has a fragrance which can cause sneezing. In fact, the dried leaves were used to make a sneezing powder.
