Japanese Forest Grass 'Beni-kaze'

A shade tolerant foliage plant to steal your heart. Bright green leaves through the warm months transform to red and purple with glints of gold in autumn. A terrific plant for under deciduous or evergreen trees with graceful, mounding foliage. The leaves can overwinter and be cut back early spring to make way for the new growth.
Excellent along pathways, down narrow areas alongside the house which are shaded and often hard to fill, rockeries, beneath shrubs even in pots.
A woodland plant (the clue in the common name, Forest Grass), you will achieve the best golden colour with a morning sun or bright filtered light position – avoid hot afternoon sun or it can scorch. A fantastic garden plant and equally good in containers. Try them in rockeries, edges, mass plantings, woodland gardens or pots.
The soft yellow and green flowers open on narrow stems above the plant in summer but are insignificant compared to the beauty of the foliage, they mature to bronze seed heads which sway in the gentlest of breezes. These leaves are similar in texture to bamboo.
Plant Hakonechloa 'Beni-kaze' in a morning sun position with moderately fertile to humus rich, well drained soil. The clump will increase gradually through underground rhizomes. Water well to establish, it takes plants four to six weeks for their roots to penetrate and gain access to the moisture and nutrients of the surrounding soil. They appreciate consistent moisture during active growth. Prune back late winter/early spring to allow the new foliage to shine.
