The bark is a decorative garden feature. The olive green branches of Pere David Maple have cream stripes snaking up the trunk. New twigs have a purple tone before aging to green, the stripes emerge as the branches mature.

The leaves of Per David Maple (Acer davidii) are ovate with occasional lobes. The foliage is mid green and in autumn it glows yellow, orange and then red. The leaves hold well, particularly in sheltered areas and cool climates.

The cream flowers of Acer davidii are small and pendent, opening mid to late spring. The samaras are paired and reddish brown.

Pere David Maple grows at a moderate rate and will eventually grow into a medium sized tree, 10-15m tall in around 10 years. The form is rounded to broadly spreading with upright branches.

Acer davidii was discovered by French Jesuit missionary and naturalist, Jean Pere Armand David. His name is used in the common name for the tree.
